Frank - just bought a new (used 96/yellow savage) and found during my checkover that my brake return spring is floating loose also. I,m also interested in the fix. In my case my bike came with a new supertrapp. I feel the spring was probably reassembled wrong during muffler installation. Right now the rear brake shoe return springs are probably what is returning the foot operated brake lever. I don't feel that is a serious problem but should be fixed nevertheless. The exhaust heat shield on the right side of the pipe I think needs to be removed to bend the loose end of the spring backward toward the rear of the bike around and in back of the bolt thru stud. Problem is that the bolt runs all the way thru to the other side. It attaches to the sidestand as part of the mounting system. This means obviously that you need a lift to hold the bike upright or a helper. Personally I would go with the helper. Two heads are usually better than one, though not always.
